San Francisco taxpayers pay for it, but many don’t know what 3-1-1 is or when to use it.
3-1-1 is a 24/7 customer service center for San Francisco residents. You can call 3-1-1 or go to their website to get a live person on the phone to help you:
  • Find information, like the closest bus stop or if parking meters are in effect on a certain holiday
  • Report public issues, such as a non-working stoplight, a pothole or any other public danger
  • File certain police reports
There are also smartphone apps for Apple, Blackberry, and Android devices, from which you can report issues directly and see what issues have already been reported.
Homeowners and property owners should know of a few great tools that are offered by 3-1-1 via the website or by calling directly. You can
  • Track the status of building permits
  • Get any related forms you need for construction
  • Rport construction nuisances and violations
  • Report sidewalk dumping, and DPW will clear it away within 48 hours of reporting.
  • Report graffiti or request Animal Control services.
These tips just scratch the surface of what type of information you can get, and how you can help the city become a safer place, by using 3-1-1. So check out the website today, www.sf311.org, and download the app to your phone!
